Take It On Faith

Joshua Kadison Take It On Faith Lyrics
1.Take It On Faith

Lyrics:Joshua Kadison
Music:Joshua Kadison

Hey, I didn't mean a thing I said last night.
I swear I didn't mean a word I used.
You don't have to listen, baby. You have every right
to feel that heart of yours has been abused.
I know I've used up all my chances a long, long time ago
and I really don't deserve to call you mine,
but, if I told you that I loved you,
could I lay back down beside you?
Could you take it on faith one more time?

Look at me I'm crying... imagine me crying.
Well, it's time I learned to anyway,
'cause if you're really set on one of us leaving,
I guess there's really nothing left to say.
It seems like such a shame,
but baby, I could never blame you, baby,
for leaving this old story far behind
and if I told that I love you,
could I lay back down beside you?
Could you take it on faith one more time?

I know I promised to you before
I wouldn't do anything to hurt you no more
If I could take it all back and start again...
take it all back well maybe then,
I could tell you that I love you.
I could lay back down beside you.
I could tell you that I love you, lay back down beside you.
If I told you that I love, could I lay back down beside you?
Could you take me on faith one more time?

2.American Hearts

Lyrics:Joshua Kadison
Music:Joshua Kadison

Down on Pico, a sailor on leave
finds a tattoo parlor, rolls up his sleeve.
Man takes his money, says, 'What's it gonna be?'
Kid says, 'A big red heart, signed 'Forever Marie'.'
He'll probably want to change it in a year or two.
But now it makes him happy so what can you do?

Hour later, man says, 'It's all done.'
Sailor takes a look and says, 'This ain't the one.
You wrote Martha, but her name is Marie.'
The man says, 'Yeah, this one's on me.
Here's your money, I'm sorry about it
but I've had a lot on my mind that just won't quit.'

Chorus:
American hearts, American souls,
living on American rock and roll.
Turn the radio up, cruising with your friends.
Tomorrow after work, we'll do it all again.
We're just American hearts, American souls,
living on American rock and roll.
Life ain't always easy, but it's always alright.
And Johnny got a new tattoo tonight.

Well, long-distance to his sweet Marie
says, 'You'll never guess what happened to me.'
Tells the story, every word.
Marie starts laughing at the tales she's heard.
She says, 'That's all right, you did them no harm.
It's what's in your heart, not the heart on your arm.'

CHORUS
A new tattoo tonight...

Well, things worked out just according to plan.
You see Martha came back to the tattoo man.
Standing in the doorway in a haze of smoke
she said, 'I hadda come home before you went flat broke.
Reading my name all around on
every poor sailor brand new in town.'

American hearts, American souls,
living on American rock and roll.
Turn the radio up, cruising with your friends.
Tomorrow after work, we'll do it all again.
We're just American hearts, American souls,
living for American rock and roll.
Life ain't always easy, but it's always alright
for a wanna-be Brando with his jeans on tight.

CHORUS
He got a new tattoo...
Johnny...
Johnny...
got a new tattoo.

3.The Pearl

Lyrics:Joshua Kadison
Music:Joshua Kadison

Based on a Mexican folk legend and inspired by John Steinbeck's
novella 'The Pearl'

There was a Pearl at the bottom of the sea.
He was a diver like you and me
from a little village built on the sand
where the people had nothing but faith in the Lord's hand.

In the far-away near, the Pearl was always there,
floating like a dream or like a storm in the air...
and the Pearl grew bigger on the people's despair.
When the divers went to dive they prayed the same sad prayer.

'Oh, God, help me find it this time.
When I hold it to the light, how the Pearl will shine.'

Early one morning, fates changed everything,
Zandro's baby boy felt the scorpion's sting.
The town doctor just sent them away,
'Poor people like you got no money to pay.'

In Maya's arms, her baby just cried,
while Zandro heard the Pearl's song pounding louder inside.
Into his boat he put his wife and child
and paddled out into the ocean wild.

'Oh, God, help me find it this time.
When I hold it to the light, how the Pearl will shine.
Help me Lord, help me Lord, help me Lord, help me.'
When he held it to the light the great Pearl did shine.

Evil on evil, sin on sin...
the whole town's hunger started closin in.
The priest came from the churchyard to show his deep concern.
The doctor came to visit, now there was money to be earned.

His child got better despite the doctor's pills
whose plan it was to fake him sick, then pretend to heal his
ills.
And Maya said, 'Let's throw this pearl back to sea.
I do believe it's wicked, it'll curse our family.'

Oh, God, Zandro couldn't see the sign.
When he held it to the light the Great Pearl did shine.
Shimmering, glistening, glimmering, glowing.
When he held it to the light, the Great Pearl did shine.

With knives they came to steal his precious prize.
Zandro killed beneath the starless sky.
With blood-stains on his hands they had to flee,
but some crushed his boat, so they couldn't go by sea.

They fled into the mountains by moonlight.
Three hunters close behind them through the night.
Then high up on a rocky mountain side,
Zandro found a cave for his family to hide.

He spied the hunters camp and wainted 'til they slept.
With his knife strapped to his back, down the rocks he crept.
Silently for hours, 'til he was almost there,
then just before Zandro planned to leap into the air,
high up on the mountain his child made a sound.
A gun went off, the song of eveil echoed all around.

Oh, Zandro killed the hunters
but it was all to late.
One bullet in the darkness
sealed his child's fate.

Maya took her baby down to the sea
with Zandro by her side, not beleiving such a thing could be...
that his child would never waken fro his sleep.
Then Zandro threw the Pearl with all his might
and gave it back to the deep.

There was a Pearl at the bottom of the sea.
He was a diver like you and me...
